New Regulatory Framework for Psychologists and Counsellors

WorkCover has released the regulatory framework for Psycholgists and Counsellors which will come into effect January 1, 2010.  The aim of the framework is to inmprove cost effectiveness and return to work outcomes.  Under this framework for psychologists and counsellors:

  • practitioners will need to be approved and will have an approval number,
  • guidelines for practitioners that promote evidence-based practice and delivery of services, to provide measurable outcomes for injured workers will be developed,
  • a fee schedule with maximum fees payable will be set,
  • approval will be required for providing more than 6 treatment sessions,
  • independent consultants will be appointed to provide peer support and review providers and provide independent review of treatment,
  • only treating doctors(NTD or psychiatrist) will be able to make referrals,
  • case conferencing will be promoted for better communication,
  • service providers will be required to attend training.

The guidelines do not apply to NTD or psychiatrist (provide medical services).
